Black Depths Book 4 Is Now Here

I had such a busy weekend preparing Doomed Seas for Release today! I’m so excited for this. Doomed Seas is Caesar’s story, and is kind of a jumping off point for Black Depths Series, which means, if you haven’t yet read the other books, it doesn’t matter. You can start right here (at least I think so, but maybe I’m wrong since I’m so ingrained in this world). I love the cover, I love my pirates, and I just love writing and self-publishing, since it means I’ve been able to control the Black Depths world from start to finish.

Doomed Seas is currently up on Smashwords and Amazon, and as soon as Smashwords finishing the checks, it should be up on Kobo, Nook, and iBooks. I’ve made Tales of a Redheaded Sea-Witch (Black Depths Book 1) permanently free on Smashwords, Kobo, Nook, and iBooks. It isn’t free on Kindle yet, as I’m not allowed to set that, and I need someone to report they found a lower price elsewhere, so if any of you lovely readers feels like doing me a favour, I would greatly appreciate it.

Anyway, not that Doomed Seas is done, I can focus on the final push to finish Twisted Currents, Book 5, and the last book of this section of the Black Depths Universe (though possibly not the end, as I have a few more stories I would like to write, though it may take a long time for me to get around to them). I need to wrap up Black Depths before NaNoWriMo, because this year I have a marvellous fantasy planned that I can’t wait to write. As a writer, it’s always wonderful to be able to embark on something new, and I’m really looking forward to that.

I see that there are a few new reviews up for the books since the last time I checked. I love this! Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to put up a review for any or all of my books that you’ve read. I cannot say how much authors need and love and crave reviews! If I could give each of you a hug, I would!

Okay, later this afternoon I’ll finally have my review for Empire of Storms up. I finished it last week but just have no had enough time to put my thoughts together. If you haven’t read the latest in Sarah J. Maas series, you probably won’t want to read the post, even though I try not to get too spoiler-y. I just love talking about books.

Doomed Seas Cover Blurb

It will be out on Monday! As I have just a little bit of formatting to do. Can’t wait? Here’s the blurb to get you pumped up:

Doomed Seas

Caesar knows he’s running out of time to find his father, who’s been missing for over a year. When he discovers his own grandfather, Victor, is behind not only his father’s kidnapping, but the kidnapping of innocent Neptunians all over the globe, Caesar sets sail to find what Victor wants most.

In the company of his best friend Markus, and ex-girlfriend Darya, the pirates begin their journey across the seas. But things aren’t always as they seem. The more Caesar discovers, the more he questions his loyalty. Then Caesar is given an important clue to the location of the treasure Victor hunts. Can he untangle the strings of desire, history, and hope in time to find the treasure, or will this hunt be his last?

And in case you missed it, here’s the cover:

YA Book Review: Soul Screamers by Rachel Vincent

YA Book Review: Soul Screamers Series by Rachel Vincent

This is one of those series I consumed a few years ago, buying each book as it was newly released. I was a fan of Rachel Vincent from her adult Shifters series, and since I like to read YA, too, I thought I would give this series a try.

img_4610

There are six books in the series: (associate links), and a few novellas which released between the books. The individual books were later put into omnibuses, which saves you money if you want to get copies for your shelves. Soul Screamers Volume One: My Soul to Lose\My Soul to Take\My Soul to Save: 1 can be found on Amazon.

This series centers around Kaylee, a “human” girl, who finds out she’s actually a banshee. Pretty typical premise, but the world that Rachel Vincent develops is completely unique and believable. I also happen to love banshee’s, grim reapers, and everything death related. It was easy to fall in love with the characters and get caught up in all their dramas, and this was probably one of my favorite love triangles in the world of YA. If you love demons and monsters, this is probably a series for you. I certainly enjoyed it.

How To Build Your Library for Cheap

I’m a bibliophile. I don’t try to hide it. I love books. I’m always on the look out for new books to add to my collection. However, these days, books aren’t very cheap. A brand new hardcover can run you upwards of $30, and a new paperback around $20. So what do you do when you want to feed your obsession for great new reads but don’t have enough money to buy something new?

Well, thanks to my recent belt tightening, I’ve been rediscovering how to pick up books for cheap. Now, I’m not talking about going to the library, because when you go to the library to borrow books (don’t get me wrong, I love libraries), you don’t get to KEEP the book. You don’t get to fold the pages and write your name on the inside or add a fancy book plate. UNLESS, you happen to find that book at a library sale. Just this week I picked up these three great young adult reads for a total of 75 cents! That’s right, I paid PEANUTS for these books. Sure, they’re a bit beat up and they have ‘library’ written all over them, but they also have the word WITHDRAWN, which means that they are now officially mine! Ha-ha-ha! (insert evil genius laughter here). I’m now free to write my name all over these books if that’s what I choose to do.

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead and Darkness Before Dawn by J. A. London

But, let’s be honest, the library book sale doesn’t always have the best selection. Which is why there’s the discount section at your location bookstore. Now, I’ve never seen these sections to be particularly well marked (I mean, what book store wants to sell you a hardcover for $6 when they could be selling you one for $30), so you may need to ask around. Yesterday, I found these three beauties in the sale section. I’ve even left the price tags on so you can see how cheap they are (and yes, these are all HARDCOVERS!).

Another great option for finding cheap new reads is a second hand book store. Although these are becoming few and far between in the real world, they are alive and well on the internet. You can always buy used copies on Amazon, sometimes for much cheaper than a new books, but other times not so much. Then there are speciality sites like www.bookfinder.com, which does all the hard work for you and compares the prices on all of the other sites, including Amazon, Abe Books, and Ebay, and a bunch of other used book sellers that you’ve probably never even heard of.

Then there are the book exchanges. My nearby grocery store has a nifty little book exchange tucked into the corner by the pharmacy. Don’t let the word Exchange fool you, if you don’t want to give up a book, you usually don’t have to. Instead of trading, the exchanges often have the option of ‘donating’ or paying a low set fee of 25 or 50 cents. This is how I found my copy of Girl on The Train.

img_4596
The books cost less than $20 in total!

Of course, if you’re an ereader, you can read all you like without ever having to pay for a book again! There are hundreds of free young adult books on Kindle, Kobo, and iBooks, and all you need to download them is the App and an account. Needless to say, my virtual library is at least as big as my physical library, and I’ll read books in whatever format they come in, but finding a bargain on a real, physical book? That truly makes my day. Although, sometimes when I see the crowding on my bookshelves, my ereader—and virtual library—make my day even more.

Autumn YA Books I’m Falling For…

Falling for, get it? Lol, okay, okay, that was pretty bad. But following with my seasonal tradition of picking out books I want to read in the upcoming season, here’s the list I’ve narrowed down. I’m going to stick to the calendar season, which means books released between September 22nd, 2016 to December 21st, 2016.

Autumn is my favourite season for many reason, the trees change colour, pumpkin spice lattes return, there are all the best holidays (Thanksgiving and Halloween), and the fall TV preview season (not that I have much time for TV anymore), and of course I can wear sweaters, scarves and hats to my hearts content (and even some fingerless gloves, which are perfect for cosying up with some fall reads).

So, without further chattiness, here’s my list of books I’m hoping to pick up this autumn:

  1. Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake (September 20th, 2016)

img_4589

Okay, this one falls just outside my self-imposed seasonal window, but it sounds pretty darn good to me. Three girls competing for the crown. It sounds like it’s going to bleed with drama.

2. Black Flowers, White Lies by Yvonne Ventresca (October 4th, 2016)

img_4587

This is probably my favourite on the list. When I read the blurb, I got shivers. It sounds like just the kind of frightfully delightful ghost story I like reading in preparation for Halloween.

3. What Light by Jay Asher (October 11th)

img_4585

Thirteen Reasons Why is one of my favourite YA books of all time. I see that others who have been lucky enough to get an advanced copy of What Light are saying this isn’t like Jay Asher’s first book. I don’t know if I need it to be, I just need the tension to be good, the characters to be strong, and the writing to be excellent. I’m definitely looking forward to reading Jay Asher’s sophomore novel.

4. The Stranger Game by Cylin Busby (October 25th, 2016)

img_4584

I enjoyed reading With Malice this summer, and have since decided I need more suspense in my life. With a plot that sounds vaguely like Pretty Little Liars, I have a feeling I’m really going to want to get to the bottom of this mystery.

5. Fate of Flames (Effigies #1) Sara h Raughley (November 22nd, 2016)

img_4583

I love the cover of this book so much I’ve added it to my Pinterest page of YA book covers I love (check it out here). This book sounds like an equal mix of The Selection and the Apocalypse. I hope the action is fast and the characters are strong, because come November 22nd, I plan on diving right in.

What books are you looking forward to this autumn? Anything I should add to my list?

J. E. Hunter is the author of the Black Depths Series. Tales of a Redheaded Sea-Witch, and Broken Tide, the first two books of the series can be found on  Amazon,  Kobo,  iBooks,  Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords. The third book, Dark Shores, was released April 1, 2016. The fourth and last book of the Black Depths series, Twisted Currents, will be released in the fall of 2016, after Dead Water and Doomed Seas, two Novellas featuring Caesar.

Summer Roundup

Roundup (noun) – 5. a summary, brief listing, or résumé of related facts, figures, or information – Dictionary.com

Well, it’s September 20th today. My calendar tells me that Autumn doesn’t officially start until the 22nd, but we’ve been feeling the chill in the air for a little while here, so it seems like a pretty good time to do my summer roundup.

I had a great time this year. I got some writing done, Dead Water was released on August 8th, I’ve finished the draft of Doomed Seas, which will be my first release of the fall, and I’ve begun my 365K words in a year challenge. I got some reading done, with reviews of Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini TaylorThe Shadow Hour by Melissa GreyMechanica by Betsy CornwellHarry Potter and the Cursed ChildWith Malice by Eileen CookSnow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch posted for your perusal. I got a new Kobo Aura One, which I’ve loaded up with books for the upcoming fall season, and I’m going to be posting about my most anticipated Young-Adult Fall 2016 releases tomorrow.

My favourite part of summer is just being able to sit outside, especially if the bugs are mild. It’s tradition for me to go on a trip to the Rocky Mountains, and we did that in August and got some gorgeous photos. Coupled to the mountain trip this year was attending the When Words Collide writing conference in Calgary, which is always an amazingly fun time. I learn a lot, meet knew friends, and always head home with new ideas.

I also love the summer flowers, and as fall approaches and the flowers begin to die off, I find myself missing their bright and surprising beauty. But the beauty of the changing leaves quickly fills in many of the colour gaps, until the brown of the pre-snow takes over, and then I look forward to the crisp white of the first snowfall. But first, here’s a look at my favourite blooms of the year.

What will you miss most about summer?

My Latest Book Haul

I got my Kobo Aura One earlier this week and loaded it up with books. Today was a gorgeous fall afternoon, so I thought what’s better than letting my books jump into great big piles of yellow leaves. Nothing! So here are the pics of my upcoming late summer/autumn reads. These are the books I already have. I’ll be posting soon about the upcoming Fall 2016 new releases that I’m looking forward to. But for now, pretty pictures of my featured YA pics.

Blog Tour Wrap Up and Giveaway Winners

The blog tour for Tales of a Redheaded Sea-Witch ended on September 9th, and as today is the start of a new week, it seems like a great time to do the wrap up.

Thank you to all the bloggers who took the time to read and write and post about Tales of a Redheaded Sea-Witch. I loved seeing all the posts, and I loved reading what everyone thought of Sea-Witch. My favourite comment was a plea to not have Caesar turn into a bad guy—which is amazing since Caesar has his own book coming out in a couple weeks. Black Depths 3.5 is called Doomed Seas, and is about where Caesar is, and what he’s up to while Nessa is running around with Amynta and Teranth in Black Depths. I’ll have a blurb to post within the next week, so be sure to check back soon and see what it’s all about!

I’ve just drawn the names of the giveaway winners and sent an email, so if you subscribed to my newsletter, make sure you check your inbox. Winners, please send me your address ASAP so I can get your copy in the mail, along with your bonus email. For anyone who didn’t win, but would like a book mark, if you send me your address, I will send you a bookmark just like the one pictured. If you haven’t had a chance to see all of the blog posts about Sea-Witch, I’ve copied the list and the links below. Happy Reading!

Don’t Write Me Beautiful…

An Essay on Heartbreaking Beauty in Young Adult Fiction

I’ve read a lot of young adult fiction, and it all seems full of love intestests who are “heartbreakingly”, “painfully”, or “achingly” beautiful. If you’ve read a book with one of the above descriptions, please raise your hand.

Yep. That’s what I thought. It’s all around. And it’s overdone.

ya-banner
Some Favs on my YA Shelf

I’ll be the first to admit that when I was attempting to write my first young adult novel, everyone in it was beautiful. The girls had long, flowing hair and smooth skin, the boys were chisled and handsome. And then I took my manuscript to a professional writer and she said point blank: “Not everyone’s beautiful.”

And I realised, this is true. Not everyone is beautiful. In fact, most people aren’t. When I thought about all the boys I dated when I was in high school, they definately were’t heartbreakingly beautiful (no offense, ex-boyfriends of mine). Was a heartbreakingly beautiful boyfriend something that I wanted? Maybe—but only because I thought it would show every girl in my homeroom that I was better than them. That it would somehow prove that I was also beautiful and amazing and awesome. But what I actually wanted was to be wanted. To be loved. So why do amazingly beautiful, flawless people exist in young adult fiction? And do we need them?

My answer is no. We don’t. I mean, I don’t necessarily want a hero that’s hard on the eyes here. But I want someone with substance. And I think the problem with writing a young adult hero that is “painfully beautiful” is that it doesn’t translate on the page. For one, I have a difficult time imagining such a beautiful person, and if I do, they all look like Ian Summerhalder. But I don’t want to imagine every hero to look the same. I want my hero to be unique from story to story. I want to love someone for more than their looks. I want to love someone because they refuse to eat pizza with their hands, or make sure every cat they come across on the street has a home, or calls their grandmother every Sunday, or spends every dime they have bailing me out of jail, or wrecking their favourite pair of jeans because I’ve just gotten stuck in quick sand. I want a voice that sends shiver up my spine and a touch that lights me on cold fire and an intelligent mind that challenges me when I’m behaving like vicious, stuck-up, prideful cat.

Is it possible that characters in popular young adult fiction are beautiful because we all want to be beautiful? Maybe. But I don’t need books that make me feel bad about myself, thank you. We’re all pretty enough. I’m pretty enough. A hero with a sharp brow or an average face is pretty enough, too.

I think, in the end, that this is why I loved Peeta so much in the Hunger Games, because he was normal. And maybe why I liked Bella in Twilight—because she was average and shy and somewhat awkward (though I think she is more “beautiful” after her transition, which we didn’t really need because we already loved her at this point)(also, don’t get me started on the beauty of the vampires). I should point out that I only find such “achingly” beautiful characters in Young Adult books of certain genres. It’s pretty rare to come across a “painfully” beautiful hero in a young adult book of realistic fiction. So ask yourself, why is that? It’s because it isn’t real. It’s fiction. Keep that in mind as a reader, all these beautiful people—they’re works of art. They aren’t real. And YOU, real YOU, are beautiful enough.

img_1512

And for all the writers out there, branch out! Don’t rely on the physical description of your character to interest your reader. Dig deeper. Make a regular Joe a magnetic soul, and make me fall in love with someone who truly feels, acts—and looks—real.
