A Blog Tour

Over the past weekend I was very busy participating in the 3-Day Novel Writing contest, which was awesome. I expunged an idea that occurred to me a while back. It felt good to get it out and put me way up on my 1,000 words a day goal. I wrote 22,000 words over the weekend, so I guess now I don’t have to write until September 23rd, but that’s not the point. The point is to write 1,000 words per day until next September. I’m hoping it really is habit forming, and that the year will teach me just to get it done!

Today however, I headed out on a five hour trip for my day job (almost all writers I know have one). I kicked it off by getting a pumpkin spice latte and browsing the bookstore. I did not, however, buy any books because my shelf is overwhelmed with books right now. But I am pretty tempted to pick up Empire of Storms on ebook.

I am currently in my hotel room, ready to wind down after spending 5 hours listening to the audiobook of Daughter of Smoke and Bone, by Laini Taylor. I actually am excited for my 5 hour drive home on Thursday because of this book! I’ll post a review on the weekend.

Oh, and last but not least, Tales of a Redheaded Sea-Witch is on tour this week, with reviews and some guests posts. If you haven’t seen them yet, here are a few links:

My September New Year Goals and Challenges

I haven’t been a student for a long time, but September has continued to feel much more like a New Year to me than the much more celebrated date in January. Maybe it has something to do with the season change come September, or all the new school supplies I still buy (hello, notebooks!), but I just love this time of year. Fall always brings with it a new start, and this year I’ve decided to set some new goals. I’ve been talking about it for a few weeks now, and as it’s almost the end of August, I’m finally going to tell you just what it is I’m planning.

Here’s my cat sitting on my goal book. Is he trying to deter me? I won’t let it happen!

I’ve been getting busier and busier. I’m getting ready to wrap up the Black Depths Universe (for now, at any rate), and have new drafts that need rewriting. I also have a storm of ideas in my head that need writing. This all adds up to one thing: I need to get to work!

So here’s what I’m going to do:

  1. I’m pledging to myself that I will write 1,000 words everyday, for a total of 365,000 words from September 1, 2016, to September 4th, 2016. Why September 4th, you ask? Because that will be the end of the 3-Day Novel Writing Contest 2017, which—just in case I fall behind on this massively huge goal—will give me the chance to make a mad dash to the end. But, I’m truly hoping that pledging to write a modest 1,000 words a day  will become habit, and therefore highly achievable.
  2. I will use that 365,000 words to finish 5 pre-determined projects which have been banging around my space in various stages of completion for the past couple years. I’m not coming up with anything new in the next twelve months. Or rather, I’m going to keep new ideas to simple jot-notes and very vague detailing. I’m not going to get sidetracked *firmly crosses-arms*. I’m going to stay ON TASK.
  3. I will go to the gym once a week (or run). Yeah, this has nothing to do with writing. But I’m putting it down here anyway because it’s important. And I’m only pledging once a week because I do have 1,000 words to write a day. Also, going from 0 to 1 seems like a pretty big jump, I’ll have to see how I handle it.
  4. I will check in on my blog once a week to update my goal progress (I’m shooting for Thursdays—we’ll see how that works).

Alright, those are my goals. As I’ve said, i’ll update here once a week to make sure I stay on track. If you feel crazy enough to join me in any or all of the above goals, comment on the post, and after each weekly post you can check in, too.

Next week, after a massive start doing the 2016 3-Day Novel Writing Contest, I’m going to update about one of those 5 pre-determined projects. Now, Ready, Set, Write!

There’s a Disaster Waiting for Me

I’m back. It was a long, and wonderful vacation, full of writing conferences, visiting with old friends, nature, and even a bit of fishing and dinosaurs…

Sadly, there was barely any reading, we just had too much to do. And now I’m home and there’s a disaster waiting for me to clean it up…

I’m hoping that somewhere under all of this mess is The Shadow Hour, a great book that I’ve been trying to finish forever so I can post a review. I think I only have about twenty pages left, so I’m really hoping I can find it soon and that the mischievous house sprites that like to misplace my things haven’t lost it forever…

When the book shows up, I’ll finish it and post my review here. If I haven’t been lost in the mountain of stuff that needs putting away. Once I’m done with the reading and the cooking I’m going to begin my new year listing (I’m much more a September New Year person than I am a January New Year person). I’ve come up with a writing challenge for myself, which I will post more of here in the next week, as well as some updates regarding the Black Depths Universe. Meanwhile, I hope you’re all enjoying these last few beautiful weeks of summer. What have  you been up to?

Self-Publishing: Making Appearances

This past weekend I did one of my first “appearances” since self-publishing the Black Depths books. I attended a little arts fair in a community where I used to live. It was in a beautiful park, on a beautiful day, and I had some great friends working the arts fair with me. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I had a great time.

When I first self-published, my plan was to sit back and do nothing and see what my book would do on its own. Well, I quickly learned that if I did nothing my book would do nothing too. So then I began doing things. Having a table at a craft fair was something I’d long day dreamed about. Part of me always thought it would be romantic and amazing and that maybe something magical would happen. Well, nothing magical did happen, but I still had a good time. The big questions is: was sitting in a park for 5 hours, hauling my 60 pound suitcase across a grassy expanse, and signing a few books worth it?

My answer is a resounding “YES”.

Because I did sign a few books. People did come past my table, see Sea-Witch sitting there, and say “OMG THIS LOOKS SOOOO GOOD! I HAVE TO HAVE IT!” (almost a direct quote). And that made me so happy. I didn’t sell a ton. But I sold something. And that was enough to put a smile on my face. (Maybe because I feared everyone would scorn me or pretend I was invisible all day). But people did see me. They stopped to browse and ask questions or just to smile. Some bought books, some bought my mother’s lovely hand drawn cards, some took part in my “Post A Word” Story Project, and some just took a business card, which means they’re going to go on-line and buy my book later (right???).

I made a bit of money, half of which I spend on this series I found on sale at my local book store and this awesomely cute The Jane Austen Notebook: A Signature Series Notebook(associate link). Don’t they look pretty together?

By the end of the day, my friend and I were already brainstorming other events we’d heard of where we could do it again. So Art in the Park 2016 will NOT be my last public appearance. It was my first. The first of many to come.

Self-Publishing VS Publishing House Power

I just recently learned that Amanda Hocking’s Switched Book Trailer stars Natalia Tena from the Harry Potter movies. Now before I say anything else, I’m going to say that I love self-publishing. I’m very glad I chose it (and I’ll get into that in a bit). But seeing this gorgeous trailer made my insides seethe a lot like Ronald Weasley’s must have when that slug-eating spell backfired on him. There is no way that I could ever afford such a big name actress (or any actress for that matter) to star in a trailer for my book as a self-published author. This just seems totally unfair. But that’s the power of a publishing house and that’s why—if I was ever offered the opportunity to work with one—I would probably consider it.

Now, maybe Natalia is just a huge fan of Amanda Hocking’s books and offered to do the movie for free, but there would still be the cost of a director, the set, and the CG butterfly. Even if Natalia and Amanda were best friends, the costuming probably would have cost a fair amount of paper. This is definitely not a cheap movie, even if it’s only a couple of minutes long. I’ve tried making my own book trailer, with a couple pretty pictures and quotes from my book (see below).

I’ve also thought of hiring my niece to star in a book trailer for me. But she hates having her picture taken. In fact, she has expressly forbid it. In other fact, if she ever reads this, she will probably demand that I erase all mention of her. In that case, I’m not talking about her I’m talking about my other niece. What? I don’t have another niece…Hmmm. Well, maybe I can spruce up my mash-up of words and music and pictures. I do have that amazing cover art now.

This brings me to my next point. Cover art is something I think self-publishing has matched the Publishing Houses on. It’s pretty easy these days to hire and amazing artist to capture the image you have in mind. For my Sea-Witch and Broken Tide covers, I’m using Leah Keeler, whom I found on Deviant Art and has been totally amazing to work with. I do the text myself, as that’s a lot more straightforward so long as you have decent editing software. But you do have to be aware of typos. Which leads me to the next point: Editing.

I have some great Beta Readers, who, through many different reads, help me catch the mistakes which slip through my fingers. There are almost always some small typos in books, even in the books put out by the Big Houses. But let’s be honest, self-published books often have more mistakes. However, I don’t always catch the typos in things I read. It’s like that Facebook post where all the words are messed about and you’re supposed to see if you can still read the thing… Well, you can. It’s perfectly legible. And that’s because our minds fill in the gaps. Now, I don’t want to be reading books full of typos, because it pulls me out of the story. And I hate making mistakes, so maybe a professional editor I don’t have to pay $10,000 dollars for would be nice. Though, even if I were to work with a Big House, I’d be paying that back in a sense with the difference in royalties. Still, an amazing editor would be a dream. What I don’t want is someone who’s trying to change my story.

And this is a definite plus for self-publishing. When I submitted Sea-Witch to an agent, I was lucky enough to find someone interested enough to read the entire manuscript and give me feedback. She was nice – a great person – but some of what she suggested just didn’t make sense for my book. But some of it was great advice, and I took it. In the end, we went our separate ways. Maybe it was because I didn’t make all the changes she wanted. But this was my story. I want it to always be my story. Tighten it, correct it, smooth it out, but don’t flatten it. Don’t chop it and tear it and burn it and cover it with dirt to make it fit what you feel the ‘market’ wants. I want my story to be unique. I want my story to be mine. I don’t want to have to sell out to become a best-seller. But seeing that book trailer…well…

Nah.

I’m sure some words floating across the screen to the soundtrack of my own slightly-out-of-practice flute playing will work just as well. Because having Grandma spontaneous turn into a bloodsucking-goblin just isn’t what I had in mind*.
