Writing 365,000 Words in a Year Update #6

Well, we’re back into fine weather here, and I’ve had a great week of meeting my writing goals. What’s really helped this week is that I’m pushing to finish rewrites to get Black Depths #5 out the door by Halloween (cover art and editing dependant). Here’s a look at the numbers for the past week:

screen-shot-2016-10-21-at-10-42-09-am

It looks fantastic, and as you can see, I’m well over my goal, so I’m thinking I might allow myself a mini-break once I finish this draft. Although, there is a short story I’m trying to finish up in order to enter it into the CBC Short Story Literary Awards Contest, and there is the fact that the point of this exercise is to write 1,000 WORDS A DAY FOR A WHOLE YEAR.

Yeah, that’s a lot tougher than it sounds. Speed wise, I can type out a thousand words in under half an hour. What’s tough is coming up with motivation. Take today for instance, I’m extremely tired because one of my little kittens did not let me sleep last night. All I want to do is nap but I pushed through anyway, and I’m even writing this blog post, though I was pretty sure I WASN’T going to do it. I think that means the writing has finally made it into my blood. It’s finally more habit and chore and hopefully from here things just get easier. I am looking forward to dropping back down to 1K a day though soon, once my currently project, Twisted Currents, is wrapped up. Self-publishing is never easy, but I’m pretty sure it’s most difficult as self-imposed deadlines approach.

Ah well, I’m sensing a celebration coming down the pipe… Probably in the form of cake, tea, and books…

What I’m Reading: Switched by Amanda Hocking

This post is a Young Adult Book Review. I only review books I’ve chosen to read, and am not compensated in any way.

Switched by Amanda Hocking is one of those books I’ve had on my shelf forever. It was, in fact, my bathroom book for the past five or so months. Does anyone else do bathroom books? You know, the book you leave in the loo just in case you need to sit in there for a while? Well, I do. But I pulled it last week because I wanted to read the second half all at once because I couldn’t wait anymore.

img_4662

I’m pretty sure by now that everyone has heard of Amanda Hocking—well, everyone in the self-publishing world anyway. She’s one of the biggest self-publishing success stories, and I, for one, would love to find that kind of success, though unfortunately, my books have been nowhere near as popular as her’s.

Switched (A Trylle Novel)(associate link), follows Wendy, a regular (so she thinks) human girl who finds out she’s a troll (albeit, magically gifted, rather good-looking troll). I think that the real charm of Switched was that it was a simple, charming telling of a rather common story (girl to princess who humbly doesn’t want to be princess). But at the same time, there were new twists, like the troll (or Trylle) aspect, and the whole changeling thing, which I’ve always found interesting. Overall, the writing was simple and there wasn’t a lot of word choice, which made for a pretty quick read and put the focus entirely on the story. I enjoyed it, and I’m intrigued enough that I’ll probably read the rest of the series.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving weekend to all my readers out there. I just wanted to take a moment to thank you all for reading my blog and following along with me on my many journeys. I appreciate each and every like and follow I received. Whether you be in Canada, the USA or far beyond the waters, I hope everyone has a great weekend and finds sometime to give thanks and spend time with loved ones.

This weekend I’m hoping to get a bit of reading done. Reading the entire Reckoners Series by Brandon Sanderson is how I dream of spending my weekend, but between all the visiting with family and turkey and cupcake and pie eating, I will probably only get through a few pages.

I will be away from the blog for a couple days for the holiday, but will be back next week to blog away. Hopefully, by the time I return, all the snow will be gone and we can get back to autumn! But still, I could resist one last gorgeous winter picture.

YA Book Review: Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas

Okay, same old blurb here: If you haven’t read any of the Throne of Glass series, you’ll probably want to skip this post. If you have read TOG, but haven’t had time to finish Empire of Storms yet, read this at your own discretion. I try not to be too spoiler-y, but sometimes a little bit of information you don’t want to know might just leak out.

img_1871

I’m going to start by saying that the more I read of Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass world, the more my relationship with it becomes love-hate. I love the world, I love the fast-pace  action and the surprising characters and the relationships, and how—thanks to Maas’s rather different writing style—there are constant surprises. But there are a few things I’m beginning to hate. Like who Aelin is with… But, I guess not everyone falls in love with the same person. Right?

I don’t think this is the strongest book in the TOG world. My favourite is still Crown of Midnight. What I didn’t like so much about Empire of Storms is that I felt like Aelin is getting away with way too much. I mean, if I knew someone who talked back that much  to almost absolutely everyone around her, I don’t know if I would really want to be her friend. And it makes me wonder if that’s why, as the books go on, there are less and less Aelin scenes.

For a few books now, my favourite character has been Manon, who is more evil by nature, so maybe she can get away with more because she isn’t supposed to be this kind of holier-than-thou character, which I feel Aelin is. The good thing is that Aelin’s attitude is kind of pointed out. Like people know Aelin is a bit… much. But like I said, it’s a love hate. I love how strong Aelin is, I love that she likes to do everything on her own. I think Sarah J. Maas’s world is so engrossing partly because of this. I think few writers can pull heartstrings like she does and keep you coming back for more (instead of slamming the book shut in disgust and refusing to read on).

I also didn’t really like all the extra S-E-X scenes in this book. I also felt it was a bit much, plus it broke with the style of the previous four books. I don’t think it was needed. TOG already has a huge fan base. I don’t think the style change was necessary, and it did not need to be that descriptive, especially for something shelved as Teen. I mean, when will Amazon and the brick-and-mortor stores put together those New Adult categories already?

But, even with all the bits I didn’t like, I will read on. I need to know what happens. I’m just not sure I’m going to agree with it.

Black Depths Book 4 Is Now Here

I had such a busy weekend preparing Doomed Seas for Release today! I’m so excited for this. Doomed Seas is Caesar’s story, and is kind of a jumping off point for Black Depths Series, which means, if you haven’t yet read the other books, it doesn’t matter. You can start right here (at least I think so, but maybe I’m wrong since I’m so ingrained in this world). I love the cover, I love my pirates, and I just love writing and self-publishing, since it means I’ve been able to control the Black Depths world from start to finish.

Doomed Seas is currently up on Smashwords and Amazon, and as soon as Smashwords finishing the checks, it should be up on Kobo, Nook, and iBooks. I’ve made Tales of a Redheaded Sea-Witch (Black Depths Book 1) permanently free on Smashwords, Kobo, Nook, and iBooks. It isn’t free on Kindle yet, as I’m not allowed to set that, and I need someone to report they found a lower price elsewhere, so if any of you lovely readers feels like doing me a favour, I would greatly appreciate it.

Anyway, not that Doomed Seas is done, I can focus on the final push to finish Twisted Currents, Book 5, and the last book of this section of the Black Depths Universe (though possibly not the end, as I have a few more stories I would like to write, though it may take a long time for me to get around to them). I need to wrap up Black Depths before NaNoWriMo, because this year I have a marvellous fantasy planned that I can’t wait to write. As a writer, it’s always wonderful to be able to embark on something new, and I’m really looking forward to that.

I see that there are a few new reviews up for the books since the last time I checked. I love this! Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to put up a review for any or all of my books that you’ve read. I cannot say how much authors need and love and crave reviews! If I could give each of you a hug, I would!

Okay, later this afternoon I’ll finally have my review for Empire of Storms up. I finished it last week but just have no had enough time to put my thoughts together. If you haven’t read the latest in Sarah J. Maas series, you probably won’t want to read the post, even though I try not to get too spoiler-y. I just love talking about books.

Doomed Seas Cover Blurb

It will be out on Monday! As I have just a little bit of formatting to do. Can’t wait? Here’s the blurb to get you pumped up:

Doomed Seas

Caesar knows he’s running out of time to find his father, who’s been missing for over a year. When he discovers his own grandfather, Victor, is behind not only his father’s kidnapping, but the kidnapping of innocent Neptunians all over the globe, Caesar sets sail to find what Victor wants most.

In the company of his best friend Markus, and ex-girlfriend Darya, the pirates begin their journey across the seas. But things aren’t always as they seem. The more Caesar discovers, the more he questions his loyalty. Then Caesar is given an important clue to the location of the treasure Victor hunts. Can he untangle the strings of desire, history, and hope in time to find the treasure, or will this hunt be his last?

And in case you missed it, here’s the cover:

YA Book Review: Soul Screamers by Rachel Vincent

YA Book Review: Soul Screamers Series by Rachel Vincent

This is one of those series I consumed a few years ago, buying each book as it was newly released. I was a fan of Rachel Vincent from her adult Shifters series, and since I like to read YA, too, I thought I would give this series a try.

img_4610

There are six books in the series: (associate links), and a few novellas which released between the books. The individual books were later put into omnibuses, which saves you money if you want to get copies for your shelves. Soul Screamers Volume One: My Soul to Lose\My Soul to Take\My Soul to Save: 1 can be found on Amazon.

This series centers around Kaylee, a “human” girl, who finds out she’s actually a banshee. Pretty typical premise, but the world that Rachel Vincent develops is completely unique and believable. I also happen to love banshee’s, grim reapers, and everything death related. It was easy to fall in love with the characters and get caught up in all their dramas, and this was probably one of my favorite love triangles in the world of YA. If you love demons and monsters, this is probably a series for you. I certainly enjoyed it.

How To Build Your Library for Cheap

I’m a bibliophile. I don’t try to hide it. I love books. I’m always on the look out for new books to add to my collection. However, these days, books aren’t very cheap. A brand new hardcover can run you upwards of $30, and a new paperback around $20. So what do you do when you want to feed your obsession for great new reads but don’t have enough money to buy something new?

Well, thanks to my recent belt tightening, I’ve been rediscovering how to pick up books for cheap. Now, I’m not talking about going to the library, because when you go to the library to borrow books (don’t get me wrong, I love libraries), you don’t get to KEEP the book. You don’t get to fold the pages and write your name on the inside or add a fancy book plate. UNLESS, you happen to find that book at a library sale. Just this week I picked up these three great young adult reads for a total of 75 cents! That’s right, I paid PEANUTS for these books. Sure, they’re a bit beat up and they have ‘library’ written all over them, but they also have the word WITHDRAWN, which means that they are now officially mine! Ha-ha-ha! (insert evil genius laughter here). I’m now free to write my name all over these books if that’s what I choose to do.

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead and Darkness Before Dawn by J. A. London

But, let’s be honest, the library book sale doesn’t always have the best selection. Which is why there’s the discount section at your location bookstore. Now, I’ve never seen these sections to be particularly well marked (I mean, what book store wants to sell you a hardcover for $6 when they could be selling you one for $30), so you may need to ask around. Yesterday, I found these three beauties in the sale section. I’ve even left the price tags on so you can see how cheap they are (and yes, these are all HARDCOVERS!).

Another great option for finding cheap new reads is a second hand book store. Although these are becoming few and far between in the real world, they are alive and well on the internet. You can always buy used copies on Amazon, sometimes for much cheaper than a new books, but other times not so much. Then there are speciality sites like www.bookfinder.com, which does all the hard work for you and compares the prices on all of the other sites, including Amazon, Abe Books, and Ebay, and a bunch of other used book sellers that you’ve probably never even heard of.

Then there are the book exchanges. My nearby grocery store has a nifty little book exchange tucked into the corner by the pharmacy. Don’t let the word Exchange fool you, if you don’t want to give up a book, you usually don’t have to. Instead of trading, the exchanges often have the option of ‘donating’ or paying a low set fee of 25 or 50 cents. This is how I found my copy of Girl on The Train.

img_4596
The books cost less than $20 in total!

Of course, if you’re an ereader, you can read all you like without ever having to pay for a book again! There are hundreds of free young adult books on Kindle, Kobo, and iBooks, and all you need to download them is the App and an account. Needless to say, my virtual library is at least as big as my physical library, and I’ll read books in whatever format they come in, but finding a bargain on a real, physical book? That truly makes my day. Although, sometimes when I see the crowding on my bookshelves, my ereader—and virtual library—make my day even more.

Autumn YA Books I’m Falling For…

Falling for, get it? Lol, okay, okay, that was pretty bad. But following with my seasonal tradition of picking out books I want to read in the upcoming season, here’s the list I’ve narrowed down. I’m going to stick to the calendar season, which means books released between September 22nd, 2016 to December 21st, 2016.

Autumn is my favourite season for many reason, the trees change colour, pumpkin spice lattes return, there are all the best holidays (Thanksgiving and Halloween), and the fall TV preview season (not that I have much time for TV anymore), and of course I can wear sweaters, scarves and hats to my hearts content (and even some fingerless gloves, which are perfect for cosying up with some fall reads).

So, without further chattiness, here’s my list of books I’m hoping to pick up this autumn:

  1. Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake (September 20th, 2016)

img_4589

Okay, this one falls just outside my self-imposed seasonal window, but it sounds pretty darn good to me. Three girls competing for the crown. It sounds like it’s going to bleed with drama.

2. Black Flowers, White Lies by Yvonne Ventresca (October 4th, 2016)

img_4587

This is probably my favourite on the list. When I read the blurb, I got shivers. It sounds like just the kind of frightfully delightful ghost story I like reading in preparation for Halloween.

3. What Light by Jay Asher (October 11th)

img_4585

Thirteen Reasons Why is one of my favourite YA books of all time. I see that others who have been lucky enough to get an advanced copy of What Light are saying this isn’t like Jay Asher’s first book. I don’t know if I need it to be, I just need the tension to be good, the characters to be strong, and the writing to be excellent. I’m definitely looking forward to reading Jay Asher’s sophomore novel.

4. The Stranger Game by Cylin Busby (October 25th, 2016)

img_4584

I enjoyed reading With Malice this summer, and have since decided I need more suspense in my life. With a plot that sounds vaguely like Pretty Little Liars, I have a feeling I’m really going to want to get to the bottom of this mystery.

5. Fate of Flames (Effigies #1) Sara h Raughley (November 22nd, 2016)

img_4583

I love the cover of this book so much I’ve added it to my Pinterest page of YA book covers I love (check it out here). This book sounds like an equal mix of The Selection and the Apocalypse. I hope the action is fast and the characters are strong, because come November 22nd, I plan on diving right in.

What books are you looking forward to this autumn? Anything I should add to my list?

J. E. Hunter is the author of the Black Depths Series. Tales of a Redheaded Sea-Witch, and Broken Tide, the first two books of the series can be found on  Amazon,  Kobo,  iBooks,  Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords. The third book, Dark Shores, was released April 1, 2016. The fourth and last book of the Black Depths series, Twisted Currents, will be released in the fall of 2016, after Dead Water and Doomed Seas, two Novellas featuring Caesar.
