365K Words in a Year Update #10

Wow, the tenth update already! Things are going well, and have become consistent with the help of Nanowrimo. I’m behind in NaNoWriMo word count, which you can see on the chart pulled from my NaNo page last night. I’m hoping I can average 2,500 words a day until the end of the month in order to win this year. I know I can do it. I’ve been reminding myself of the new journal I’ve been coveting for a while, and that I get to buy it the minute I win. This has been my primary source of motivation all week.

By mid-December I should have a completed draft of a novel I’m calling Life. I’m planning on letting Life sit for a few months while I work on rewrites for UJ and still untitled project. Once I’m done drafting Life, I’m planning on using my 1,000 words a day to finish my long overdue WattPad project, Half-Moon Blood. I also plan on spending all my free time in December trying to catch up on GoodReads goal for 2016. I pledged to read 40 books, of which I’ve finished 31. I have a bunch of half-finished novels waiting for me to read them, so I’m hoping it won’t be too challenging to finish 9 books in the next 5 weeks. The good news is, you should see a lot of reviews next months!

Also, it will be great to finish reading a bunch of books before Christmas, since I hope to get more books for presents!

YA Book Review: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

Obviously I’m going through my book journal from 2012. City of Bones is a young-adult classic. I read this back in it’s ‘hay-day’, before it got turned into a movie and then a Netflix TV show (neither of which performed well). Here’s what I thought of the book:

I borrowed this book from a friend, who bought it based on Amazon’s #1 rating. My friend wasn’t impressed with the book, and maybe her telling me that biased my own opinion a little bit. I didn’t find Clary to be a deep character. She doesn’t seem to have any interests beyond Simon. Though she occasionally draws, her art doesn’t come across as being important to her. Clary has no girl friends, which would have added to the depth of the story. Some parts of the novel were pretty transparent, and others seemed far-fetched (if you’ve read it you probably know what I’m talking about).

I gave City of Bones 3/5 stars. I went on to read the next two books in the series, but haven’t been interested enough to continue reading this world. I know some people absolutely love it, but I guess it just isn’t for me. I’ll be writing more about other books I’m currently reading this week.

365K Words in a Year Update #8

I have not been a good writer lately. I’ve written every day since NaNoWriMo began, but I’ve really been dragging my feet. Part of it is this cold that I just cannot kick, and the other is my complete addiction to catching up on Once Upon a Time on Netflix. I just can’t get enough right now!

Anyway, here’s the chart from the past week. As you can see, I’ve had a couple stellar days, and a couple really poor ones. I’m hoping I can use the long weekend to get better and get back on track. Hopefully I’ll have some more blog posts for your too!

Twisted Currents Cover Preview

I’ve been so busy getting ready for the next Black Depths Book release that I haven’t been posting. But I have good reason, and today I have something to share. Below is a preview of one corner of the Twisted Currents Cover, which my cover artist, Leah Keeler, is working away on. It’s going to be amazing, probably the best cover yet! Any guesses what the final will look like?

A Sea-Witch Review Up On The Cosy Dragon

One of my self-publishing struggles has been finding people to review my books. But the lovely Cosy Dragon reviews my book this week. You can find that review here: http://www.thecosydragon.com/2016/08/review-je-hunter-tales-of-a-redheaded-sea-witch.html

Currently, I am on vacation . We just left today and will be touring around for almost two weeks, the first stop being Drumheller, and the second the When Words Collide Writers Conference in Calgary. I will attempt to blog from the road, but I’m not making any promises! I’ll definately update when I return!

It’s here: The Next Black Depths Story on Kindle

It’s here! I’ve been working away on a prequel story for the Black Depths Universe. This story, centring around Caesar and Darya, is an adventure story. It is pivotal to the events which are going to take place in Twisted Currents, which will be out this fall. And the cover for Dead Water is amazing.

Dead Water is out on Kindle today, and will only be released on Kindle (for the time being, anyway). And I’m going to use Dead Water to help celebrate my signing and reading of Dark Shores Wednesday night at McNally Robinson in Saskatoon. That’s right, Dead Water will be FREE from August 11th to August 15th! Make sure you download your copy while you can! This is a thank youth all my lovely readers, who I know are impatiently waiting the next full length book. Well, Twisted Currents is still coming along rather well (there have been a few potholes), but better than that, Doomed Seas (the next Caesar book, which is actually a short novel), is nearing completion, which means Doomed Seas will be out first, which also makes sense for the storyline. In a month or so I will be reveling the back cover copy for Doomed Seas, but until then, enjoy Dead Water and don’t forget to tell me what you think!

Tales of a Redheaded Sea-Witch, and Broken Tide, the first two books of the series can be found on  Amazon,  Kobo,  iBooks,  Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords. The third book, Dark Shores, was released April 1, 2016. The fourth and last book of the Black Depths series, Twisted Currents, will be released in the fall of 2016, after Dead Water and Doomed Seas, two Novellas featuring Caesar.

YA Book Review: The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong

YA Book Review: The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong

Continuing with posting about books I’ve previously read, I finished The Awakening (Darkest Powers series Book 2) (associate link) in 2012. This is what I wrote in my book journal:

The entire book took place over approximately 3 days. I tend not to like this, as character development and growth doesn’t seem as believable to me. I believe that characters need time to change—to reflect on what they’ve gone through and then learn from it. However, it made the story fast paced and quick moving. There were a few awkward places in the story—but not as bad as in the first book. I’m pretty sure I can see what’s coming in book 3, but I do really want to know how it all ends.

I rated the book 3/5 stars.
